Marty received his B.F.A degree in Commercial Art from the University of Southern Mississippi and an M.A. degree in Art Education from the University of Mississippi. He retired in May 2006 from Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi after having served as art instructor and gallery director for 37 years.
After retiring from teaching, he built a pottery studio at his home. Though he continues to paint commissioned paintings, he enjoys working in his pottery studio with his wife Shelia. He enjoys the limitless possibilities one can achieve in clay and especially loves the "raku" firing process.
Shelia minored in art in college taking a ceramics class where she enjoyed handbuilding. She says she has had a wonderful private instructor in her husband, Marty. "I have loved spending time in the art world with him. Watching him paint, seeing him teach and encourage his students, visiting museums and galleries--all of it has influenced me greatlly. I've probably learned what I know by osmosis from Marty's career, plus our shared interest in art."
Marty says Shelia's pottery is original and often whimsical. "She seems to have endless creative ideas which I think is amazing."
Together they spend much time in their backyard studio, enjoying the world of clay.
